There is a haunting irony on the gathering that was held Sunday at the site of a fatal fire in Philadelphia.
Family, friends and fellow first responders gathered on the one-year anniversary of the fire that claimed the life of Philadelphia Fire Capt. Matt LeTourneau.
Even in death, LeTourneau will continue his life-mission - educating and training those taking up the mission of firefighting. A memorial foundation in his name is being established to award scholarships to deserving young potential first responders.
It was something LeTourneau, a Springfield native and longtime township volunteer, pushed all the time. He was a constant presence at the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center in Darby Townshp. He was a state-certified instructor who took the time to mentor countless young volunteers.
That's because he knew long ago something a recent state report only underscores. People simply are not volunteering the way they used to. In fact, some state officials are now warning about a looming "crisis" in emergency services because of the dearth of volunteers.
Want to honor Matt LeTourneau's memory? Consider volunteering.
We talk about it on today's editorial page.
