'Do You Believe in Miracles? YES'

There are some moments you don't forget.

This is one of them.

I refer to them as times that make the hair on your neck stand up. I can also admit they bring a tear to your eye. It was on this date in 1980 that a group of young American men shocked the sports world by pulling off one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

The USA ice hockey team beat the vaunted Russians, a team considered the best in the world, and a team that had romped over this group of mostly college kids just a few months before.

The call of the final minute of this game, by Al Michaels, immediately became one of the classics of sports broadcasting. "Do You Believe in Miracles? YES!"

What might be slightly less of a miracle is the likelihood that not that many people actually saw the game played live. It was not broadcast live in U.S. TV, although it was in Canada. It was delayed for a prime-time showing in the U.S.

Also, the U.S. did not win the gold medal by beating the Russians. This was a semifinal matchup. They still had to beat a very good Finland team to take the gold medal.
