One last salute to a Delco icon - Frank Pica Jr.

A big part of this job is knowing your audience, what they want and what they expect from the newspaper.

That's why I chose a story to lead our front page Saturday that perhaps some people might have questioned.

Not our readers. They weighed in loud and clear.

They loved it.

Because they love Pica's.

There are a few things that literally scream 'Delco.'

Pica's Pizza, from the legendary Upper Darby eatery is one of them.

I discovered this a few years ago when we held a "Best Pizza in Delco" contest as part of the "Live From the Newsroom" we used to do on the website.

Delco takes its pizza seriously.

And they love the odd, square-shaped, thick crust delicacy that so many of them grew up on from Pica's.

And this was before it rocketed to national fame when late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon decided to surprise Upper Darby home girl with some of her favorite food when she appeared on his show one night. He actually dispatched a staffer on the train down to Delco to get some Pica's and surprised her with it on the show.

She of course gushed about her favorite Delco delicacy, then proceeded to dig in.

All of this played into why I assigned a reporter to get reaction from the family and customers when we got word that Pica's owner Frank Pica Jr. had passed away at 77.

We paid this Delco icon our inimitable honor - a front page that noted, "A slice of Delco is gone."

Pica's. It doesn't get more Delco than that.
