In the dead of February, they are the three most beautiful words in the English language:
Pitchers and Catchers.
Today will mark the first workout for pitchers and catchers as the Phillies report to their spring home in Clearwater. The rest of the lineup is due next week.
Among the new faces is the guy many consider to be the best catcher in baseball, J.T. Realmuto. There is also shortstop Jean Segura. And outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
All of that, however, is yet to unfold.
Today, the first day of spring training, is for dreams. For new life. For hot, muggy weather. For evenings spent on the deck with nothing but the stars, crickets, a cold beverage and Franke and L.A. on the radio for company.
It is a hint, a whiff, that the snow and ice will end. The temperatures will rise. The ground will (hopoefully) dry up.
Spring can't be far off.
And summer is right behind.
