A sad end to the search for John Morphet

This is the news no one wanted to hear.

And everyone feared.

We got word last night that they had found the body of John Morphet, a popular Delaware County musician who played the drums for the local band Jimmy Shoe and The Shine."

A post on the Facebook page that was put up after Morphet went missing early Friday morning announced the sad news:

"He was found close to his family home in Middletown around 6 p.m. Wednesday night. Thanks to everyone for their search efforts. John Will live in our memories forever."

John Morphet was 54.

Stories like this one jar your sense of security. I am a decade older than John. You wonder what happens to people, how they fall through the cracks, if there was something else that could have been done, maybe something I or the newspaper could have done.

In this instance, it reconnected me with an old employee, a person who once wrote for the newspaper and has spent his life in the same field I have toiled in every day for the past four decades. He was close to the band, and in particular John, and he was clearly shattered by the last few days.

It's just so damn sad.
