It is the headline I waited my entire life to write.
Phinally!
That's what we greeted our readers with the morning after the Eagles ended a lifetime of fan misery by finally capturing the Lombardi Trophy in beating the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
I was tempted to roll that one out again this morning. Instead we went to 'The Bryce is Right.'
It's over. After a million twists and turns, the Phillies got their man.
They signed superstar rightfielder Bryce Harper. What did it take? Oh, only $330 million. Harper signed a 13-year deal with a no-trade clause. So much for all that talk about him not wanting to play in Philly or a demand for an opt-out clause.
Harper is going to be a Phillie for the rest of his career.
Gabe Kapler can pen him into that No. 2 spot in his lineup and lock it in for the rest of the summer.
Some major kudos here are due Phillies owner John Middleton. He said he was going to spend "stupid money." Yeah, $330 million to play baseball is stupid territory. But, Middleton would have been vilified if he had not reeled in one of the offseason's two big prizes. He lost out on Manny Machado to the Padres. It appeared as if the Phils were going to lose out in the Harper derby as well.
Then came news yesterday afternoon that the deal was done.
How crazy are things getting.
Well, I can only assume that this is not some kind of PR prank, but I just received an press release indicating local radio station BEN-FM was changing its name to BRYCE-FM.
The press release from Beasley Media Group, which owns the station, says they will rename 95.7 BEN FM to become 95.7 BRYCE-FM in Philadelphia.
The format will remain the same, only the name will change.
“We’re very excited about Bryce making a long-term commitment to the team and fans in Philadelphia,” said Morning Host Matt Cord. “We thought it would be fun to give him his due by renaming the station in tribute to him.”
Welcome to the Bryce Harper era.
