The Evans family is an imposing clan.
And with good reason.
Mike played for the Eagles, an offensive lineman out of Boston College who was with the Birds from 1968-73.
But that was not the first thing I noticed about him last night.
I could not resist staring at his ring.
I finally got up the nerve to ask him about it.
It was his NFL Alumni ring, and it would probably go around two of my fingers.
I also got got to meet his wife, Kitty. They founded Evco Industries and recently started the Margaret Lindgren Fund in honor of Kitty's mom. The organization supports single mothers who have experienced financial hardship due to an illness in the family or the loss of a loved one. I also met their equally imposing son Patt, who also just screams "football player." They make them big in the Evans clan.
They were seated at my table at last night's 18th annual recognition dinner thrown by The Community's Foundation.
I also got to meet the Sperratores, Mark and Laura, owners of Sperr's Fuel and Heating, who took home the Philanthropist of the Year Award for their work with Vest-A-Cop.
My thanks to Kurt Slenn and all the folks at TCF for a great night, including the opportunity to meet some very special young people.
The 15 high school scholars who took home more than $100,000 in scholarship money. All of these young people will take up careers in the health care field.
In my business, it's pretty easy to get a jaded, skewed view of our communities. So much of what we report details people doing the wrong thing.
Then you get the chance to walk into the Spring Haven Club last night, and you realize just how much good is being done every day behind the scenes.
Our congratulations to these young scholars, and all the organizations honored last night, including Susan K. Garrison and The Center Foundation; The Breathing Room, which offers crucial aid and therapy for families dealing with cancer issues; and Philanthropist of the Year Sperr's Fuel and Heating.
