It is something all of us do just about every day.
In fact, it's such an intrinsic part of our routine, we even have a name for it.
It's called a Wawa run.
Maybe that's why I can't quite get my head around what happened last Thursday night in a Wawa in Radnor Township.
That's when police say a man walked into the Wawa with an AR-15-style rifle and shot his wife at point-blank range, killing her.
Ironically, one of the very first people I thought after hearing the details of this story was Sen. Tom Killion.v
It was exactly circumstances like this one that Killion had in mind last year when he was successful in pushing a bill through the state Legislature that would make it easier to get guns out of the hands of people involved in domestic abuse incidents.v
Brian Kennedy and Stephanie Miller had been involved in a long, bitter divorce and custody battle. She got a Protection From Abuse order from him. It lapsed last September when she did not seek to renew it.
He actually had sought PFAs against her several times in Chester County Court. His request was rejected each time.
It is not yet known when, how or where Kennedy acquired the rifle he was wielding when strode into the Wawa last Thursday night.
I still can't imagine standing in the line at the Wawa with a cup of coffee and witnessing that.
It stresses a couple of things we've said before. Just as District Attorney Katayoun Copeland indicated, a PFA is just a piece of paper. It does not necessarily stop anyone with evil intent.v
And it's clear we still need to do more to protect the victims of domestic violence.
