Teach your children well

Somewhere along the line, this newspaper picked up the reputation of being anti-teacher.

It's not a stance I happen to agree with, but I think I know where it comes from.

The bane of almost every homeowner in Delaware County is the dreaded property tax. A lot of senior citizens, along with those on fixed incomes, struggle to pay what is commonly referred to as their "school taxes" every year.

Some of them don't, and are forced from the homes where they spent their lives - even though they no longer have kids in the local school district.

A lot of people look at their school tax bill and immediately look for someone to blame.

Too often that glare falls on teachers.

It happens every time we publish a story on a school district once again hiking taxes. Or when teachers decide they need to take action - sometimes even striking - in an effort to win a pay raise.

On today's editorial page, we offer another view of teachers.

We offer our salute to this year's winners of the annual Excellence in Teaching awards.

We believe they are well-deserved.

And we're happy to offer another view of teachers.

As the song says, "teach your children well."

Words these 19 individuals certainly have done proud.
