D-Day in 4 words: They saved the world

June 6.

If that date does not move you, perhaps the story of Andy Schiavone will.

He was one of the thousands of young Americans - just kids, really - who found themselves on the beaches of Normandy 75 years ago today.

You can read his story here.

To mark the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord, today we present in addition to Schiavone's saga a special supplement detailing the history of that monumental task.

On our editorial page, and again in this supplement, we talk about the challenge these young soldiers faces.

Our debt to them is one that can't be repaid, but can be honored by continuing to defend freedom at every turn.

How big was the challenge they faced? How arduous was their mission? How big a price did so many pay?

We can sum that up in four simple words:

They saved the world.
