The Phillies are in desperate need of an off day.
If for nothing else to register a day without a loss.
That's not going to happen.
The Phils open a series tonight vs. the Mets at an increasingly restless Citizens Bank Park.
It comes on the heels of the Phils ruining a perfect weekend by losing again to the lowly Marlins. Yes, they got swept. That's seven losses in a row. They have not won a game since Saturday, June 15. That's more than a week ago.
A day off might give this team the chance to take stock. That's not going to happen. The heat is only going to build - on both manager Gabe Kapler and his struggling lineup.
An off day might have allowed Phillies' management to do something - anything - to right this ship. When a team with this much talent goes into this kind of funk, someone has to pay the price. That is usually the manager, if not one of his coaches.
But with another series - this one against the hated Mets - in the on-deck circle starting tonight, I don't think the Phillies are going to pull the trigger.
That doesn't mean it's not going to happen. I just don't think anything will happen today.
A few more losses? Well, at that point all bets are off.
Here's our coverage of the ugly picture that went down on a gorgeous afternoon at the ballpark yesterday:
Matt DeGeorge: Phillies pitchers not helping the situation.
Rob Parent: Kapler think his team just needs to keep working.
