Welcome to summer

Welcome to summer, which officially arrives at 11:54 a.m.

The summer solstice also just happens to be the longest day of the year, which means I'm out of excuses in terms of cutting the grass when I get home tonight.

We will have a little more than 15 hours of daylight today. The sun will not set until 8:33 p.m. after rising at 5:32 a.m. That's exactly 15 hours and one minute of daylight.

I love it.

Now if only the Phillies would cooperate and snap out of this funk. The weather folks are doing their part. After the chance of a morning shower, the sun will take over and the humidity is expected to drop. The first weekend of summer looks like a winner, with lots of sun and comfortable highs in the low 80s.

Of course that depends on what you consider comfortable? Me? I'd opt for a nice thick night and heavy humidity.

Speaking of June 21 and the Phillies, this should mean something very special to any Phillies fan worth his or her salt.

It was on this date in 1964 (months before their epic collapse that broke our heart) Jim Bunning unfurled a perfect game against the Mets.

And on Father's Day to boot.

I still kick myself for going to the pool that day and missing a huge date in Philly sports history.
