A big challenge for Harper, Phillies - surviving the Eagles

We're about to find out if Bryce Harper is worth that $330 million Phillies owner John Middleton deposited into his bank account when he signed the superstar.

But maybe not for the reason you think.

The Phillies arrive home for a crucial series that kicks off Friday night vs. the first-place Braves at Citizens Bank Park. They sit 5 1/2 games back of Atlanta.

The Phils did what they were supposed to do in Detroit, taking two games from the lowly Tigers. They're 7-3 in their last 10 games. They got a strong start from Vince Velasquez Wednesday, and another light-out performance from the bullpen. The pitching staff also has markedly cut down on the number of home runs they are giving up.

Manager Gabe Kapler even gave Harper the day off Wednesday to have him rested for Friday night.

None of that is likely the biggest challenge the Phillies and Harper face.

A lot of years, the baseball season would end today - the first day of Eagles training camp.

It's up to Harper and this Phillies team to stay relevant - and compete for that coveted position on the Back Page.

Winning a weekend series against the Braves would go a long way toward that goal - and extend the baseball season into August and September.
