The heart of the news

This business has a tendency to harden your heart.

You find yourself laughing or telling an off-color joke when others are weeping.

Every once in awhile you have to stop and check yourself, realizing from the looks of those around you that not everyone views the world the way newspaper people do.

It's a defense mechanism.

In short, we laugh to keep from crying.

That got a lot tougher last week.

It was a long, miserable week.

I write about it in my weekly print column, my Letter from the Editor.
