More debate about the debates

I had an interesting phone conversation yesterday with Elaine Paul Schaefer.

She is one of the Democrats running for the three seats up for grabs on Delaware County Council in November.

She wanted to make a correction to yesterday's story, which indicated that there is much debate about the debates, and in fact there may be only one that features all six candidates, three Republicans and three Democrats.

Schaefer said Democrats have not agreed to ANY debates, but not because they don't want to.

She says Republicans have not reached out to have any conversation with them.

Why do I find it not terribly hard to believe that the two sides would end up arguing over the logistics about these debates. Ever since the Republicans announced they wanted to have a series of five debates in various locations around the county, I have been marveling at the way things have changed in this county's political dynamic.

It was not that long ago that Republicans were not all that thrilled about the prospect of debating. That's what sometimes happens when you have an overwhelming voter registration edge.

Those glory days are over for the Delco GOP. They got walloped in the last couple of elections and are now facing the distinct possibility of an All-Democratic County Council should the Dems sweep the county races again.

Then the Republicans reached out to me to be the moderator for the first debate, scheduled for Sept. 10 at Neumann University, I accepted, but only the proviso that they work out all the logistics and that both sides agree.

That obviously did not happen.

Where this all goes now I don't know.I am not moderating a debate that only features one side.

No doubt there will be more debate about these debates in the days to come.
