Somebody needs to hand Gabe Kapler a calendar.
The Phillies manager seems to be stuck in a time warp.
Every day, after another in a seemingly endless string of listless efforts from his squad, the Phillies' skipper talks about how the team is not playing up to its potential, but that he still feels it is capable of going on a run "in the second half."
Yo, Gabe.
It's August. The All-Star Break was a month ago, the official halfway point even farther back.
This team continues to be stuck in idle.
This weekend they managed to lose a series to the lowly Chicago White Sox, who arrived at the vet a handful of games under .500.
They sandwiched another very good effort from Aaron Nola for a win Saturday around lackluster efforts Friday and Sunday. The bats, in a lineup that was expected to be a juggernaut, continue to be MIA.
The pitching, outside of Nola, is anyone's guess.
Friday night the Phils treated those fans who stuck around to a game that they lost with an outfielder on the mound and a pitcher in the outfield.
Maybe the team was looking to send some kind of message yesterday when they sent the consistently inconsistent Maikel Franco down to Triple A Lehigh Valley.
It didn't work.
And somehow they remain in the hunt for the wild card.
They now are on the road, starting tonight in Arizona.
No doubt Kapler will continue to believe his squad can get on a run.
The only thing this team is getting on is a plane that will deliver them in Arizona.
