The scourge of the drunk driver in Pennsylvania is not going away.
We tend to focus on these things when high-profile stories hit the news, such as the DUI driver who slammed into a car carrying 45-year-old Deana Eckman of Brookhaven and her husband, Chris. Deana was killed in the crash. The impaired driver entered a guilty plea last week.
But new figures out from the Pennsylvania state police show that this menace might actually be getting worse, not better.
Pa. state troopers made 20,143 arrests for DUI in 2018, that's up 1 percent from the year before.
Here in Troop K, which patrols many Delco highways, troopers made 1,707 arrests, third highest in the state.
The bottom line is this. Suspending the driving privileges of a convicted DUI driver will not prevent him or her from climbing behind the wheel.
It's time to let technology take the lead in making our highways free of these rolling time bombs.
We talk about it on today's editorial page.
