They're off and running in Delco politics

Call it the Battle of the Media Courthouse.

You might remember the last time jobs on the Delaware County Council were up for grabs, something odd happened.

Democrats won both seats. That had not happened - a Democrat being elected to Delaware County Council - since before the Home Rule Charter was adopted back in the '70s.

Not only that but they also swept all three county row offices up for grabs.

All of which makes this November's election that much more interesting.

Even with the election of two Democrats, Republicans still control the county's ruling body, 3-2.

But there are three seats being contested in November.

Both Republican Council Chairman John McBlain and Councilwoman Colleen Morrone have served their full terms and will be leaving. GOP Councilman Michael Culp has decided not to seek re-election.

That means control of the Media Courthouse hangs in the balance.

And that, of course, means this could be a bruising election season.

We've already had one casualty.

I was supposed to be moderating the first in a series of five debates between the two slates Tuesday night at Neumann University. That will not happen.

When I agreed to moderate, I made it clear that it depended on both sides agreeing to the parameters. That apparently didn't happen.

If you listen to Democrats, the Republicans never even talked to them before putting out a press release announcing the five debates.

In other words, it's election season in Delco. I talk about it in today's print Letter From the Editor.

Fasten your seatbelts, folks. I think this one is going to be a bumpy ride.
