There is no easy way to cover a story like this.
There is no way to avoid it, either.
They played a soccer game at Strath Haven High School last night.
But that was about the last thing on most people's minds.
The game actually had been postponed from the day before. That's because the school was still reeling in the aftermath of a tragedy. They had lost one of their own, a young life gone way too soon.
I like to think that the newspaper is part of the glue that holds communities together. We chronicle citizens - including our kids - at their best. And yes, at times not in the best of moments.
The Strath Haven community came together last night not only to play a soccer game, but to united and console one another, and honor a friend and classmate.
How to handle such a delicate situation is the kind of thing that keeps editors up at night.
As I said, there is no easy way to do it. Some of the details were handled by news.
As for covering the game, I don't think you could strike a better tone than the story written by Matt DeGeorge last night.
Our intent in these situations is never to add to the agony of such a situation. But rather to chronicle what happened, the reaction, and the resolve of those left to carry on.
I think we did that again last night.
