While Phillies owner John Middleton continues to ponder the fate of his manager, and whether or not Gabe Kapler should return for another year, here's another name that sort of encapsulizes what's wrong with the Phillies.
Anyone remember Charlie Morton?
Yes, that would be the same Charlie Morton who went to the hill for Tampa Bay last night. With their backs to the wall, facing elimination at the hands of the Astros, Morton threw five solid innings, giving up just one run on three hits. That makes Morton 4-0 in playoff elimination games. He also was the winning pitcher in last week's Wild Card victory over the A's.
Unfortunately, none of those came with the Phillies.
But Morton was once on the Phils' roster.
The Phillies picked up Morton before the 2016 season from the Pirates. He had one year and $8 million left on his deal.
Morton pitched well in the exhibition season, but tore his hamstring in his fourth start of the young season. He missed the rest of the season. The next year he was a free agent and the Phils passed on him.
Morton signed a deal with the Astros.
The Phils could have reconsidered last year and signed Morton, who once again was a free agent. Instead he went to Tampa on a two-year, $30 million deal.
How good would Morton look along with Aaron Nola in solidifying the Phils' shaky rotation.
He looked pretty good last night.
