Kids today are living in a different world

The county continues to struggle in the grip of a rash of attempted child lurings.

Police departments in both Haverford and Upper Darby are investigating incidents of adult men trying to get kids into their cars.

And now it's hit in the western end of the county. State Police are investigating a similar incident that occurred when a man approached some kids who were playing in their back yard.

Read that sentence again. These kids were in their back yard when a guy started talking to them from the other side of the fence.

Luckily, in all of these cases, police say the kids did exactly the right thing - ignoring the adults' request, and quickly running and informing adults.

Police in Haverford have released sketches of two different men they believe might be connected to these incidents. You can get all the details here.

The lesson? Be careful out there.

It reminds me that kids today are growing up in a much different world than the carefree existence I recall as a child.

When we got home from school, we quickly got out of our clothes and rushed out of the house. If they were lucky, our moms got a faint "Out," in response to where we were going.

That's where we were - out. I guess they figured when we got hungry - or it got dark - we would return, no worse for the where. Those days are long gone.

Parents rarely allow kids out of their sight, and when they do, are ubiquitous cell phones keep track of where our kids are. Text when you get there is the new byword that kids - and parents - live by.

And today's headlines only prove again why - and how much the world has changed.

The end of this article is trash. The ignorance of your youth does not justify any conclusions about the “problems of today.” These are the same tired, lazy, talking points of every generation that came before. There is no evidence or statistic that would suggest we are less safe today than “back in the day.” In fact, the opposite is true. These anecdotal tales about society in the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. are misleading and incomplete.
