Making some history in Upper Darby

There were several stories we could have used as our Page One lead this morning.

We chose this one.

That's because Laina Stevens made some history in Upper Darby Tuesday night.

She became the first African-American to be promoted to the rank of sergeant in the township's history.

Ever.

That strikes us as historic.

And certainly worthy of being noted on Page One.

Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said the moment was long overdue.

"I'm proud to be part of that promotional process, as I am for everybody. With respect to the Upper Darby Police Department we have 80,000 people, a very diverse community ... her promotion and her assignment will show the community that we care." We could not agree more.

Kudos to Laina Stevens.

Make that Sgt. Laina Stevens.

And all the others who received promotions as well.
