Phillies & Nats: A tale of two teams

Buckle your seat belts, Phillies fans. This one is going to be tough to swallow.

Anyone remember May 23? We were heading into the Memorial Day weekend, with the entire summer lying just over the horizon.

Our pinstriped heroes were in first place, 10 full games ahead of the lowly Nationals, who no doubt were wondering if they had made a major mistake in allowing superstar Bryce Harper to walk away, signing a mega $330 million deal with the Phillies.

Fast-forward four and a half months.

Last night the Washington Nationals completed a sweep of the highly touted St. Louis Cardinals to win the National League pennant and advance to the first World Series appearance in team history.

The Phils? They're looking for a new manager, after another hot start fizzled into still one more epic late-season collapse.

Hey, we finished over .500, but it wasn't enough to save Gabe Kapler's job.

If nothing else, the Nats prove the old adage, good pitching always beats good hitting.

Bryce Harper had a very good season, putting up the expected numbers and playing a great rightfield.

But the Phillies starting rotation - as well as their bullpen for that matter - was a disaster.

The results? They're popping corks in D.C.

While it's wait 'til next year in Philly.
