The best and worst of sports

Two sports stories caught our attention yesterday.

No, none of them involved the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers or Sixers.

Yes, we are aware Ben Simmons hit his first 3-pointer as a pro last night. Stop the presses.

No, we were struck by two stories that at first glace might seem to be diametrically opposed.

They involved Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford and pro golfer Brandon Matthews, who once starred at Temple.

Clifford received death threats after that loss to Minnesota two weeks ago that knocked Penn State from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Matthews was involved in an incident on the course involving an outburst from a fan.

In their own, different ways, these two stories tell us everything that is wrong - and right -sports.

We weaved them both into today's editorial.

Speaking of the best of sports, serious kudos go out to the Eagles for stepping up and offering the Linc as the venue to finish that high school football game between Pleasantville and Camden High that was halted by gunfire last week.

It was a nice thing to do and no doubt provided a memory that will last forever for these young athletes.

Several Eagles players, including quarterback Carson Wentz, walked across from their practice facility to offer a boost to the young athletes.

Making it even more poignant - and even more incredibly sad - is the fact that the teams received word just before the game was to resume that the 10-year-old who was shot in the incident - had succumbed to his injuries.
