A very important voice heard from in the David Sheppard case

The echoes from the David Sheppard case continue to reverberate through the Delaware County Courthouse.

Today, Sheppard, who was convicted in connection with a fatal holdup at an Overbrook pharmacy in 1992, is a free man. Granted clemency by Gov. Tom Wolf, he left prison with family members Monday morning, headed to a halfway house.

But Sheppard is not done with the law. That's because he still faces trial for a shoplifting charge - also from 1992, before the deadly armed robbery in which Sheppard served as a lookout.

Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland made national headlines by saying she would rearrest Sheppard on his release on the old shoplifting case, which involved ripping off several pairs of blue jeans worth about $300.

But Copeland made it clear that her efforts were not so much about keeping Sheppard in jail as allowing the voice of the victim and his family to be heard.

To that end, a very important voice was heard outside the courthouse after Sheppard's hearing Monday.

That would be the voice of the daughter of the victim in that holdup.

It's on today's editorial page.
