A new motto for Upper Darby: We Are The World

Well, this should be fun.

Upper Darby is looking for a new township motto.

It's one of the first pronouncements from new Democratic Mayor Barbarann Keffer. On Monday she announced a competition to come up with a new township slogan.

Submissions must be accompanied with the resident’s name and address and an up to 150-word explanation of why the slogan best fits Upper Darby. Submissions should be sent to udtransition@gmail.com. The contest will close at end of business on Friday, Jan, 24. The winning motto will be placed on the official government signs placed throughout the township.

I'm assuming "Not in my town, scumbag," the saying made famous by former Upper Darby top cop Mike Chitwood, is not in the running.

The thing that has always struck me about Upper Darby is its diversity.

If you were looking for the ideal of America as a "melting pot," Upper Darby is the place to go.

More than 70 dialects are spoke in Upper Darby schools. Residents come to the township from every corner of the globe.

Thus, with apologies to USA for Africa and the tune penned in 1985 in the war on poverty, here is my contribution to the contest:

WELCOME TO UPPER DARBY,

WE ARE THE WORLD!

If that one doesn't grab you, how about this:

WELCOME TO UPPER DARBY,

THE WORLD NEXT DOOR
