Deana's Law and repeat DUI offenders

On today's editorial page, we lauded the fact that the county did not sustain a single fatality on the roads over the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Earlier this week we had urged motorists who planned to be out partying on New Year's Eve to make arrangements so that they would not have to climb behind the wheel to get home after drinking.

We asked them to do so in honor of someone who would not be ringing in the new year. Deana Eckman, of Brookhaven, was killed my a man who already had been charged five times with driving under the influence.

A package of bills sponsored by Delco Sen. Tom Killion, R-9 of Middletown, dubbed "Deana's Law" in her honor, that would crack down on repeat DUI offenders was passed by a Senate committee last fall. It will be taken up by the Senate when they return to Harrisburg after the holiday break.

So how ironic is it that today's lead story details a man who now has racked up 11 DUI charges.

It's true. If someone is intent on getting behind the wheel while impaired, there really is no ironclad way to stop them.

But Deana's Law would make it a lot more difficult. The Senate can't pass it soon enough.
