Here's a revelation, a bright spot in the rubble of the Eagles' disheartening loss to the Seahawks and early exit from the playoffs.
Is it possible that this team of castoffs and practice squad players may have earned even more respect from the toughest fan base in the world with their gutty effort.
Is is possible that ill-fated quarterback Carson Wentz, who lasted just eight plays into his first playoff game after missing the post-season in his first two seasons with injuries, finally chased away the ghost of Nick Foles with his performance over the final four weeks of the season, putting the team on his back and willing them to win four straight, taking the NFC East crown and in the process a home playoff game.
Our hearts went out to the QB even more after his head was slammed off the Linc turf on by Seahawks defensive end Jadaveon Clowney. Wentz suffered a concussion on the play, retreating to the locker room. He did not return.
Enter Josh McCown, who seemingly has played for every team in the league in a 17-year career. But the one thing he had not done - until Sunday - gave him a common bond with Wentz. He had never played in a post-season game.
McCown was unable to recreate the magic of Nick Foles, but if his effort in defeat did not move you, you might want to check your pulse.
As he limped off the field, he was helped by tight end Zach Ertz, who played in the game despite suffering a rib injury and lacerated kidney just two weeks ago.
I say all this because the Eagles and Wentz won over their toughest critic - my wife. She made it pretty clear most of the season she did not care for this team. But she was moved at the way they rallied to overcome all those injuries, the way the stuck together, the way they achieved things no one thought they could.
She knows a little bit about star-crossed Philly athletes. Her favorite of all time is Flyers great Eric Lindros. She could not help but point out the similarities to the situation Wentz faced this year, tasked with putting the team on his shoulders while battling injury.
