The view from the 700 Level: Harold Carmichael, Hall of Famer

He was the one constant on some pretty bad Eagles teams.

Constant excellence.

I know. I saw it first-hand, from my perch high up in the 700 Level. I still don't believe some of the things I saw up there, but there is no doubt about Carmichael.

He was pure class.

The first thing you noticed about Carmichael was his size. He didn't look like your classic wide receiver. He was too big. Carmichael was an imposing 6 feet, 8 inches tall, with long arms that just seemed to swallow up the ball. If you could get it close to him, he would catch it.

Carmichael did not have the classic "burner" speed. He just had everything else.

How good was Carmichael? In a stellar 13-year career (1971-83) from 1973-1983 he racked up 590 receptions for 8,985 yards with 79 career touchdown catches.

As I said, Carmichael was a constant. How constant. At one point he set an NFL mark by catching at least one pass in 127 straight games.

He was named to four Pro Bowls, three All-Pro teams and second team on the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team.

Finally, years too late for my liking, No. 17 is being duly honored with his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Canton is finally catching on to something the "veterans" of the bedlam that was the 700 Level at Veterans Stadium have known for a long time.

Harold was always a Hall of Famer in our book.
