Raising Kane: Dems back labor leader to face Killion in Pa. Senate race

Forget Iowa. They don't have results yet anyhow.

Looking for a race to watch?

Keep your eyes on the 9th District state Senate race here in Delaware County.

Incumbent Republican Tom Killion, of Middletown, will be hard-pressed to overcome the anti-Trump fervor in the suburbs that has caused Republicans dearly in recent elections.

It appears like Killion's opponent will be longtime Delco labor leader John Kane, who received an overwhelming endorsement from Delaware County Democrats Sunday. Kane got 85 percent of the vote.

"I have known John Kane for many years. John has always been a valued leader in our community,” said Delaware County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Colleen Guiney. “For decades, John has been a great partner to our Democratic committee, and Democratic values. I am thrilled that he received our committee's endorsement with such enormous support. I believe that he is well equipped and dedicated to serving the people of the 9th Senatorial District."

Kane sounds like he is ready for battle, hoping to flip a state Senate seat that has been in Republican hands since the time of the legendary Clarence Bell.

“I’m incredibly grateful to the Delaware County Democratic Committee and the Committee People of the 9th Senatorial District,” Kane said. “This committee has put its trust in me, and I won’t forget that. I am going to work tirelessly to ensure that we win this race and bring real progress to Delaware and Chester counties.”

It's not Kane's first foray into politics. He lost a race against Tom McGarrigle for the 26th District seat in the state Senate a few years ago. He has since moved to Chester County, into the 9th District.

The 9th District seat covers towns in both Delaware and Chester counties, but 65 percent of the district sits in Delco.
