Subaru Park arrives in Chester

Chester's soccer stadium has a new name.

Yes, another one.

No, it is not Chester Park, as one enterprising reader suggested.

Nor is it Andy Lewis Stadium, as the editor suggested with tongue firmly in cheek, in light of the "no" vote cast by then County Councilman Andy Lewis on the bond question to use public money to finance construction of the stadium. At the time it was the only non-unanimous 5-0 vote in memory of the then all-Republican board.

Times change. The board is now 5-0 Democrat.

Stadium names change, too.

What started out as PPL Park in 2010, then morphed into Talen Energy Stadium in 2015, will now be known as Subaru Park.

Officials of the Philadelphia Union, which plays its Major League Soccer games in the facility on the Chester waterfront, execs from the Camden-based car company and city honchos held a press conference Tuesday to unveil the name change.

It's more than just a new name. As Matt DeGeorge explains, this is part of the Union's push to secure their role in the Philadelphia sports landscape, and a key member of the community.
