A salute to Malcolm Jenkins - on & off the field

This is when we are usually bracing for the NBA and NHL playoffs.

And when hope 'springs' eternal, with baseball just around the corner.

But in a world turned upside down, with all the major sports shut down, leave it to the Eagles to once again claim their rightful spot on the Back Page.

The Birds made some news yesterday, announcing they were parting way with safety Malcolm Jenkins. I can't argue with the move. The team needs to get younger - and faster. And Jenkins is looking for several years - likely his last shot at some big money.

It probably works for both sides.

Having said that, I will salute Jenkins for being a class act, both on and off the field.

Jenkins considered himself more than a football player. He was a member of our society and our community. He had opinions on important social issues and and was not afraid to voice them.

Those included the notion of taking a knee during the National Anthem, as well as interactions between people of color and police. As opposed to his actions on the field, Jenkins raised his voice to seek answers, not confrontation.

He will be missed.
