No free water ice at Rita's to herald spring

Yesterday was the first day of spring, with spring arriving just before midnight, but there was at least one harbinger of the change of season missing.

Rita's cancelled its traditional water ice giveaway to welcome spring. Yep, rack up another victim of the coronavirus outbreak.

The familiar local water ice chain was open, but there was no free samples that usually mark the first day of spring. The company nixed the idea in light of recommendations to avoid large public gatherings.

“In light of the increasing concerns around COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the precautionary risks associated with large gatherings, Rita’s is postponing our annual Free Ice Giveaway to celebrate first day of spring,” Rita’s said in a prepared statement.

It's not known as yet how Gov. Tom Wolf's ban on all 'non-life-sustaining' business will affect the water ice icon.

It's certainly going to feel like spring out there later today. Actually, it's going to feel more like May, with temperatures expected to push toward the 80-degree mark.

A water ice might be just the ticket.
