We're looking for the best boys and girls Delco high school hoops teams of all time

You may have noticed there's not a lot going on in the world of sports.

Sure, the Eagles are still making a few deals, and preparing for the NFL Draft.

But there are no games.

Major League Baseball, which would normally be kicking off the season, is on hold. Today was supposed to be opening day for the Phillies, their earliest opener in history. Yeah, I'm hurting, too.

The NHL and NBA, instead of careening crazily toward the playoffs, are silent.

Even the PIAA has shut down its season-ending high school hoops tournaments.

All of this, of course, is in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that has turned out world upside-down.

We are in dire need of diversions. And nowhere is that more apparent than in sports.

I think we have an answer. I can't believe it took a pandemic for us to come up with it.

For years we have proudly proclaimed our sports department as "Delaware County's Sports Authority."

We're about to prove it.

Either that or we've completely lost our minds.

What we have in mind is settling perhaps the greatest Delco sports argument of all time: We are planning to determine the best boys and girls high school basketball teams of all time.

Fear not, hoops junkies.

Bracketology is not dead.

Right on schedule, this week we will deliver two sets of Sweet 16s, one each for the best boys and girls teams of all time. Our panel of high school hoops experts have accepted the challenge of compiling the best high school hoops teams of all time.

How monumental is this task? Well consider that Delco has produced 19 state championship teams. Also, 23 squads have appeared in PIAA title tilts, bringing the total to 42 teams that played for state championship. We're looking to pare that down to 16 teams to compete for our mythical crown.

The same holds true on the girls' side.

And we want the fans to get involved as well. You can email your suggestions for our boys and girls Sweet 16 fields to sports@delcotimes.com. The first brackets will appear Saturday.

We're calling it Delco Madness.

Sounds about right.

Actually, it sounds like a slam dunk to me.
