No joy in Mudville on what was supposed to be opening day

There is no joy in Mudville.

Yes, that is in part due to the pestilence known as COVID-19, a scourge that continues to turn our world upside down. But there is another reason as well.

One that certainly will resonate with sports fans.

Today was supposed to be opening day.

That certainly was on the mind of Jim Quinlan, who sent in this photo yesterday of his season ticket package and ducats for today's opener as a reminder of what the novel coronavirus has taken away from us.

It's one of those harbingers of spring.

Today was the day we were supposed to get our first glimpse of Joe Girardi and the squad he and GM Matt Klentak had put together. The Phils were due to face the Milwaukee Brewers at 3 o'clock at Citizens Bank Park.

Instead, we will remain sequestered in our homes, with the rest of Pennsylvania now joining in the fun, under the latest ruling from Gov. Tom Wolf.

The Boys of Summer are on hold.

The Boys of Simmer - that uneasy feeling boiling in the pit of our stomachs - is just getting started.
